Reading an Essay's Lineage

Reading an Essay's Lineage

Most publishing hides how a piece was made. An essay arrives finished, and the reader is asked to trust the byline. The work here is produced differently: each essay records its own production lineage — a causal graph of the steps that led to it — and that record travels with the published page. This essay is built around its own lineage. The graph below is not an illustration of the argument; it is the argument. Read down the page and the graph walks with you, surfacing one step at a time in the margin and lighting the matching node.

The brief

A run begins with a signal: the editorial brief. It states the question the essay should answer and the boundaries it should respect. Nothing downstream is trusted more than this starting point allows — if the brief is narrow, the claims stay narrow. In the graph it is the leftmost node, the origin every later step traces back to.

Research

The first working step gathers sources and constraints. Its job is not to be persuasive but to be honest about footing: what is established, what is merely plausible, and what is assumed for the sake of argument. The edge from the brief to research is labelled with the confidence the run assigns to that hand-off, so a reader can see where certainty is high and where it is provisional.

Draft

The draft turns research into prose. Each claim is meant to tie back to a source recorded in the previous step, so the lineage stays traceable: you can follow any sentence back through the draft to the research that justifies it. This is the node where the essay first takes shape as something readable.

Human review

A draft is not a publication. A human editor revises the framing, removes overreach, and tightens the claim boundaries — the line between what the essay proves and what it only suggests. The graph marks this edge as an influence rather than a clean production: review reshapes the draft, it does not regenerate it. This is where authorship becomes genuinely collaborative.

Attribution

Once the prose settles, authorship is reconciled line by line into the X-Ray overlay: which spans are human, which are AI, which are a collaboration of the two. This is the honesty layer made concrete. It is also why the lineage matters — without it, "written with AI assistance" is a slogan; with it, the claim is checkable against the record.

Published

The final node is the projection that ships to the public site. It carries the lineage with it, which is what lets this page render its own causal graph as a first-class object rather than a footnote. Open the graph to its full window to read the whole chain at once, or scroll back up and watch it light node by node. The provenance is not an afterthought attached to the essay; it is the spine the essay is written along.
